Happy Leap Day

You don't get to blog on Feb. 29 very often, so today I'm breaking my recent no-blogging streak.

Happy Leap Day.

I don't have very many memories of Leap Day...in most ways, it's just like any other day. But one small experience from when I was young always sticks out.

My family was living in Riverton, Utah, which means I was between the ages of 10 and 16. Oh hey, this experience obviously occurred on a Leap Year so I can figure this out. Let's see...

2012 - 25

2008 - 21

2004 - 17

2000 - 13

1996 - 9

Ding, ding, ding. It was in the year 2000, and I was 13. That makes this story slightly more embarrassing. I'd prefer to have been 10 or 11.

This Leap Day fell on a Tuesday. All I remember is that I was with my siblings and mother running errands for what seemed to be foooorrreeeeeeevvvvvveeer.

The next stop was the bank.

Reluctantly I got out of the car once again. After all the bank usually has some sort of candy, and my 13-year-old self wasn't about to pass up on a free sucker. (Again, I wish I had been 10....)

Well, the bank did me one up.

Not only were they passing out their normal lollipops, but because of the rare occasion of the once-in-four-years holiday, they were also offering free donuts and hot chocolate.

Donuts and hot chocolate!

At the bank!!

How cool is that?

I don't think I really grasped what Leap Day was at the time. I mean some months have 30 days and some months have 31... why was it such a big deal that February had 29? (Yes, I was 13....and I'm shaking my head at myself.) But hey, if I get free food out of it, I'm all for the fuss.

At that moment—in my completely satisfied and excited mentality—I declared that I was going to come to the bank EVERY Leap Day. It was the highlight of my holiday, after all.

TWELVE YEARS LATER

Today, I'm sad to report that I have never been back to the bank on a Leap Day since. No donuts and hot chocolate for me. :(

BUT ... I *am* always up for hearing about special deals and celebrations. How are you celebrating? What deals/freebies have you seen?

And remember, it doesn't take much to impress me. I'm talking donuts and hot chocolate here.

Oh, just an interesting sidenote. This CNN article talks about Leap Year babies. The main picture shows a REALTOR I work with who was born on a Leap Day, along with his daughter who was also born on a Leap Day, who was pregnant and planned to be induced on Leap Day this year. (This was past her due date.) Turns out she delivered her baby Tuesday night.
