At the beginning of January, the Deseret News launched a new section of the newspaper—the Mormon Times. Now this section is in addition to the Church News (which is actually also an official publication of the Church). But the Mormon Times will offer “more news and information about the LDS Church and its members” and will include both news and feature stories that will “inform and edify Latter-day Saints and others who are interested in LDS religion and culture.”
Now a little before this launch, the professor from my multimedia journalism class had sent out an email saying that, because our own launch of In Tune never seemed to work out, the Mormon Times would be picking up and publishing some of our work from that class. (If we had objections, we could let him know.)
Our class focus during that semester was to create a Web-zine on the LDS music scene (In Tune), with each student picking (or being assigned by default) different artists, albums, and topics to interview, review, and address. Near the end of the semester each of us in the class set about designing the look and function of the zine for our final project. One was chosen to be pushed live through BYU News Net. And yes, they chose mine…but as you can see, the whole thing never ended up working out.
Anyways, my point is coming. A friend’s blog prompted me again to insert my name (I seem to do this a lot) into Google….and what did I find?
Mormon Times did indeed publish my article. I’m not yet sure if it went into actual print but it’s kinda crazy how this stuff can happen without the author reeeeaally knowing. I don’t know enough about the archiving of this site yet to explore any of my other work having been used, or even the work of my classmates, but as of right now I know they used my article about Michael Hicks, the creator of the famous EFY medley.
